Air force core values

We all have read about these incidents and experienced the shame associated with them. All of us have heard about the sensational scandals--senior officers and NCOs engaged in adulterous fraternization; the tragic and senseless crashes of the Ramstein CT and the Fairchild B; contractor fraud and cost overruns; and the shootdown of the two Blackhawk helicopters over Iraq.

How successful are we in trying to live by the Core Values.

To serve is to do one's duty, and our duties are most commonly expressed through rules. At that point, the mission suffers, and the ripple effects can be devastating. It is not an employment agency. It promotes the safe, efficient, and flexible use of airspace, mitigates the risk of fratricide, enhances both offensive and defensive operations, and permits greater agility of air operations as a whole.

If a crisis occurs, rapid generation and, if necessary, deployment of nuclear strike capabilities will demonstrate US resolve and may prompt an adversary to alter the course of action deemed threatening to our national interest.

While it may be the Air force core values that professionals are expected to exercise judgment in the performance of their duties, good professionals understand that rules have a reason for being, and the default position must be to follow those rules unless there is a clear, operational reason for refus ing to do so.

The important thing is not the three road signs our leaders choose. Air Force personnelwhether officer, enlisted, civil servant, or contractor Core values make the military what it is; without them, we cannot succeed.

The Core Values are much more than minimum standards. They are the values that anchor resolve in the most difficult situations.

These national objectives in turn provide the direction for developing overall military objectives, which are used to develop the objectives and strategy for each theater. It cannot be produced by pampering or coddling an army, and is not necessarily destroyed by hardship, danger, or even calamity.
